My name is Jan Steele and I play and teach the saxophone, flute and clarinet and I'm a composer. You will soon be able to find out more about me as a performer and composer by looking at another website of mine - www.jansteele.co.uk - which I am still designing.

If you are looking for a jazz band for an event then please look at my dedicated live jazz & latin band site.

This site is dedicated to my teaching.

I'm a very experienced music teacher with nearly 40 years experience of teaching saxophone, clarinet, flute, music theory and jazz improvization in state and independent schools, colleges, universities, schools of music and privately. Nowadays I confine my music teaching to my home in Caversham, Reading, Berkshire. For more detail of my experience you can have a look at a more formal c.v.

As well as being a music teacher I am a STAT - qualified teacher of the Alexander Technique which I teach at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

I have a full CRB disclosure, and full public liability insurance. I also have DfE Qualified Teacher Status.

If you are thinking of having lessons with me and would like to talk to a current (adult) pupil or the parents of a current child pupil first then please contact me.

You can hear me playing the saxophone and flute in different contexts on my Media Page.

You can find out more about learning to improvize jazz.

And there isn't much more to say – but you can have a trial lesson, a few lessons, or a one off lesson with no future commitment – as long as I can fit you in. Before you contact me you may want to have a look at the Lessons FAQ’s Page where I attempt to answer the sort of questions I have been asked by prospective pupils over the years. The most important thing to know is this -

I aim to make my teaching fun. This is because music is my life and it is the only thing I want to do, and I hope that my enthusiasm for it is transmitted to my students. The most fun to be had from playing a musical instrument is when you work at it!

If you want to know something more then just phone or email me.
